2016

Chad Herring and his wife, Dorene re-open the oldest family-owned retail business as Straus for Men at 4487 Calico Drive South on 45th Street in Fargo, North Dakota. Herring is the stepson of John Stern and is the fifth generation of the family to own the store. 

Chad worked for the historic company more than 20 years ago, and is thrilled to build on the legendary tradition of style and service that the Straus name has been known for.


The History of Straus


1879

Adolph Sternberg, a cousin of M.G. Straus, opens the family's first retail store in Sanborn, ND.


1882

Adolph Sternberg moved his store from Sanborn, ND to Valley City when it was named the county seat. A location which became the Straus Mall 95 years later.


1897

M.G. Straus arrived from Portsmouth Ohio to buy a store in Casselton, ND.
He was a cousin of Adolph Sternberg who had opened a store in Sanborn, ND in 1879.


1907

Mr. Sternberg passed away and M.G. Straus purchased the Valley City store. He sent his young whipper-snapper of a nephew, Herman Stern, to run the new store.


1920

Mr. Straus retired to San Diego, leaving Morris Katz in charge of Casselton store and
Herman Stern in Valley City.


1932

Herman’s son, Ed Stern, began working as a salesman for the family store in Valley City.


1936

Purchased the Esquire Shop in Fargo, where Herman’s son Ed Stern started in management. The store moved to a larger site in 1941 and expanded in 1950.


1955

Grand Forks beckoned. They purchased the Havig store and moved in to their location.


1960-1969

Fire destroyed the Fargo store on Easter Sunday, 1963. The family rebuilt and moved back into the same location in 1964.

Purchased Beck’s in Jamestown, ND.


1979-1980

Opened second Fargo location at West Acres Mall. Ed’s sons, John and Rick Stern, joined
the management team.

The Valley City store was up-dated with the innovative Straus Mall, one of the show-place retail establishments in the area.

Moved downtown store in Grand Forks to Columbia Mall.


1980-2000

Recognized as oldest family owned retail business in North Dakota.

Consolidated the Fargo stores into one location on 13th Avenue South, the final location for Straus Clothing. Other store locations in ND: LaMoure, Carrington and Devils Lake.

First Straus website was launched.


2001-2015

Opened a contemporary men's clothing store called aka in downtown Fargo. 

AKA and Staus merged into the 13th Avenue South location.

John and Rick Stern, 4th generation owners, announced their retirement and the 136-year history is put on hold.
